CARNIVAL!  YEEHAW!  The Roadrunner Roundup Carnival was a huge success.  The weather was beautiful and the vittles were hot!  Thank you to all of the families, friends, and faculty for coming out to support our school.  Many thanks go out to our neighborhood sponsors, family underwriters and the many volunteers who make the carnival possible.  You make Briargrove the great school that it is!  And if you didn’t get to dunk our new principle, Debi Russell, at the dunk tank….there’s always next year! 

A Texas-sized thank you to our Carnival Gals, Stacey Coneley, Courtney Mitchell and Melinda Prewett for rounding up our herd last Saturday for a boot-scootin’, dosey doin’ good time!!  Your steadiness in the saddle made for a smooth, fun event that raised thousands of dollars for our Briargrove students.  Hang up your hats and turn out the light girls-you did a GREAT job!

DADS CLUB:  Thanks to all who volunteered to man the haunted house and grill and to those who sold raffle tickets for the carnival!  The raffle alone raised over $25,000 for the school!  Great work!

LOST AND FOUND:  All lost and found articles that remain unclaimed on Monday, November 2, will be donated to a local charity.  Please stop by and look for your children’s lost and unlabeled lunch boxes, sweaters, jackets and other items in our Lost and Found cabinet in the front office before November 2!

LUNCH MONEY INFORMATION:  Did you know that you can check your student’s cafeteria account balance and purchases, make secure online payments and receive low balance email messages by going to www.parentonline.net ?  Even if you are not making online payments on your student’s cafeteria account, you can still register your student and obtain this information.  You will need your child’s student ID #, which you will find on his/her report card, (report cards are being sent home on November 4), or by calling the front office.

PATRIOT DAY IS COMING!  Family and friends are invited to enjoy “An Afternoon of Recitations and Dancing” at 1:30pm, Thursday November 5th in the cafeteria as part of the Fifth Grade Patriot’s Day Celebration.  The students will have spent the day participating in numerous colonial activities culminating in an evening reception.  The students will be arriving in shifts at the home of Rick and Susan McConn.  They will receive an invitation from their teacher indicating their time of arrival to witness additional colonial people and activities.  Remember that all students must be in costume.  Check with Ms. Klusener if you have any costume questions.  Any parent that is available to help and be willing to wear a costume should contact Janet Taylor at tntjbt@sbcglobal.net.

TRAFFIC AND SAFETY:  Reminder to parents that there is no stopping/dropping off kids on Briar Ridge in the morning, you must go through front or back carpool, and no left or right turn off San Felipe onto Briarmead  from 7:30-8:00 and 3:00-3:30. 

VANGUARD NEWS:  All 5th and Kindergarten students will take the NNAT2 on Tuesday, November 3rd!  There will be a Parent/Teacher Focus Meeting on Tuesday, November 10th at 9:00am and 6:00pm.  The 9:00am Guest Speaker is Linda Reihl—Vanguard Coordinator at Grady Middle School,  and the 6:00pm Guest Speaker is Brenda Pederson—Vanguard Coordinator at Lanier Middle School. 

There will be a parent information meeting for all parents interested in applying to the Vanguard Program for the 2010-2011 school year on Monday, November 30th.  Procedures, timelines, expectations and applications will be available at that time.  The meeting will be at 9:00am and 6:00pm.

BACKGROUND CHECKS FOR VOLUNTEERS: All volunteers must register online and pass a criminal background check before they can participate as a volunteer in any HISD school.  Please go to www.houstonisd.org and go to VIPS login.  Once you have registered, you must go in person to Mary Clare Ward in the front office and show your proof of identification.  The criminal background check can take up to 2-3 weeks.  Once you have been cleared to volunteer, HISD will reprocess your information each summer!

CARNIVAL! 2009 BRIARGROVE “Roadrunner Roundup”:   Howdy partners!  We are getting excited about the BG Roadrunner Roundup Carnival!  Mark your calendars for October 24th from 11am-3pm.  Here’s what you can do...

GRADY REBUILD:  It’s official!  Grady Middle School will be rebuilt in a two phase program.  The site planning phase is almost complete and the architects will begin the detailed planning of the specific structure.

PARKING:  Houston Fire Marshalls had the fire lane curbs repainted and the signs replaced in the front drive of the school.  Please be aware as they will begin ticketing vehicles parked in these zones.   Also, the parking spaces in the back of the school are for teachers and staff only.   Please park in the spaces along San Felipe or in the front circle drive if you are coming into the school for any reason. PATRIOT DAY IS COMING!  The fifth graders will soon begin their study of Colonial America culminating in a Patriot’s Day Celebration on Thursday, November 5th.  All of the students will dress in period costumes.  They will spend the day at school experiencing activities from the colonial times.  The highlight is an evening event also replicating the period.  They should begin planning their costumes now.  Mrs. Klusener will be sending more information home soon.  We will need some parents to dress in costume and help that day at school as well as the evening event.  Please email Janet Taylor at tntjbt@sbcglobal.net if you can help.

READING ROCKS AND ROADRUNNERS READ!  Hooray for our 130 Summer Readers who enjoyed Donuts and the Reading Rocks "Band" in the Briargrove Library Tuesday morning, 9/25.  Together, those who turned in reading lists, read almost 2,000 books!  100 students read at least 10 books while 7 students read between 50 and 80 books!  One young man read 3,859 pages!  Some students participated in and reaped the rewards of 3-4 reading programs.  Congratulations to all of our Summer Readers especially Lauren Haley, 1st grade, who read the most books at 80 and Thomas Jackson, 1st grade, who won the drawing for 4 Dynamo soccer tickets to this weekend's game!

STUDENT PICTURES!  Fall Individual pictures will be held on Tuesday, October 6h (Grades K, 1 & 2) and Wednesday, October 7th (Grades 3, 4 & 5).

TRAFFIC AND SAFETY:  In order to improve traffic flow, cars will only be able to turn LEFT onto Briar Ridge when exiting from the back carpool line.  Please pay attention and be ready to follow directions from the police officer and crossing guards stationed at the carpool exit.

2009 BRIARGROVE CARNIVAL   “Roadrunner Roundup”:  Mark your calendars and get your horse saddled up to mosey on over to the Briargrove Carnival!  This year, our western-themed Roadrunner Roundup is set for Saturday, October 24^th from 11am -3pm. The Briargrove Carnival is one of the school’s biggest fundraisers and it’s not just for Briargrove students!  Please invite friends, family and neighbors to share in the fun!  There will be a mechanical bull, a “dunk your teachers” booth, an inflatable obstacle course, pony rides, the Dad’s Club Haunted House, a cake walk and yummy bake sale, confetti eggs, invisible ink and much more!  Year after year the BG Carnival has been a huge success due to our parent and teacher involvement.

JOIN THE DADS CLUB!  Briargrove Dads provide the money and muscle for many activities at our school.  We grill hamburgers and hot dogs during carnival. We create and man a haunted house during carnival. We set up a pumpkin patch with painted pumpkins for sale. We have a golf tournament or clay shoot every spring, and we raffle prizes at carnival every year.  These activities and others allow us to raise money towards projects at the school that otherwise might not get funded.

First Meeting – 7:00 Wednesday, September 9th, El Patio Party Room on Westheimer, free for all Dads.
We will discuss projects for the Dads and possible fundraising activities along with identifying leaders for certain projects.  A few door prizes will be offered to those in attendance!

Fall Parents Party – 7:00 Thursday, September 24th, Molina’s on Westheimer, $20 a person, $25 at the door
A Fiesta!  With Food, Fun, and limited drink provided.  It’s a great way to meet other parents, catch up with those you haven’t seen all summer, and kick off the fall season.

DIRECTORY: Don't forget to update your Student Information Form online if you have not already done so!   The deadline for information is September 25th.  This form is used to include your child in the Briargrove Student Directory and can be found on online at www.bgroadrunners.org/traffic-and-safety.  There is a link to register your child for a carpool number.  It is the same form we use to collect directory information.  In the “directory” portion of the form, you must click on “yes” to include your information in the directory.

EARLY LANGUAGE LEARNERS:  The Early Language Learners Program offers Spanish classes after school on campus.  Our experienced teachers use the whole language approach and classes are interactive and engaging.  Classes begin Friday, September 11th.  Go to www.earlylanguagelearners.com or call 713-722-0063 for more information. 

GRADY NEWS: G-Camp in August was a success for the incoming 6^th grade students.  Students were able to learn their way around the school, meet their teachers, receive their textbooks, and meet new people.  We will definitely do this again next year.

GRADY REBUILD UPDATE:  On September 10th,  we are expecting the HISD Board of Trustees to vote on  the funding for the  facilities package that was approved on August 27,2009.  The package includes Grady Middle School and will release funds to begin rebuilding the campus. Harvin Moore, our District Trustee, David and Edlyn Pursell, Grady PTO presidents 2008-09, Mary Lynn Khater  mckhater@swbell.net, Grady PTO president 2009-2010, and a group of committed volunteers have worked hard to see this through.  Thank you for your efforts.  Everyone's support is greatly appreciated and we still need it.  HISD board meetings are open to the public.  Please plan to attend the meeting Thurs, Sept 10 at 5:00,  4400 W. 18th street to show your support for the package. This is a fluid process and things change from day to day.  If you would like to be emailed with updates regarding this matter please send your email address to Emily Kennedy at ekenned@aol.com

SUMMER READING PROGRAM:  It’s time to turn in your summer reading list!  Teachers will collect lists through Friday, September 4^th.  If you have read 5 books, you have helped HISD students read a million books!  You have earned a t-shirt and are invited to a donut party before school on 9/22/09.  If you have read 10, 20, 30 or more books, you have earned an additional prize or prizes!  Also, there is still time to take  your list of 8 books to Barnes and Noble for a summer reading prize through 9/7/09.

TRAFFIC AND SAFETY:  Please affix your carpool number on the upper right corner or visor using the clear sleeve provided with your number.  ***There is a new State law banning hand held cell phone use in school zones that went into effect on September 1st.  Please refrain from using your cell phones while in the carpool line to ensure our children’s safety.

UNIFORM DEPOT: Donated uniforms will be available for free during the two nights of Open House (Tues, Sept 15 and Thurs, Sept 17).  Uniform Depot is a service provided by the PTO whereby students can obtain gently used uniforms at no cost.  Donations of uniforms are welcome anytime during school hours and may be dropped off in the PTO room.

Grady News - Breakfast with the Grady Principal – The students who are definitely committed to attending Grady as 6th graders were invited to a breakfast with Mrs. Hoffman on December 11th. Mrs. Hoffman had a great turnout and she really enjoyed meeting her new students. The students will be invited each month to discuss middle school questions with their future principal. Make sure your 5th grader is not left out. Please turn in your Grady applications by January 9th to receive an invitation.

FAMILY MATH NIGHT - An evening of fun mathematic skill building through games and challenges for grades K-5.  Bring the family and join us at the school Monday, November 24th from 6:30 - 8 pm to enjoy a night filled with SUM fun!  Look for a flier to come home soon with more details.

PTO BOARD MEETING - Thursday, November 20 at 6:30pm at the home of Beth Richey.  This is a "Bring a Friend" meeting.

YEARBOOK AND SHOOTING STARS! - Don't forget to pre-order your yearbook and recognize your child with a "shooting star" to make a lasting memory!.  Fill out the order form that was sent home and return it to their teacher.   Please contact Kenze Beyer kenze.beyer@transwestern.net with any questions. 

• Before Jan 1, 2009 - $10 for shooting star + $30 for yearbook = $40
• After Jan 1, 2009 - $15 for shooting star + $35 for yearbook = $50

YEARBOOK PHOTOS - Ensure your shooting star and his/her friends are represented in the yearbook.  All you have to do is put your pictures straight from your camera to a disk and give them to the front desk at Briargrove.  Remeber to write the student(s) name, grade, class and the event on the disk.  Thanks a bunch!!

BG DIRECTORY - Go to the school store and purchase your directory.  We will begin distributing them in the next week.

LOST AND FOUND - Our Lost and found is overflowing with unmarked lunch boxes, sweater, jackets and a sundry of other lost articles.  They wll be placed on the stage in the cafeteria for parents to claim their children's lost items.  On Friday, Novemeber 14 all leftover items will be taken to a local charity.

BOX TOPS - Box Tops for Education Containers are now in all classrooms, so start sending in the ones you have been collecting.
